Veteran Seth Moulton Releases Statement on Iraq

Moulton: “I stand behind President Obama” on humanitarian aid, “remain deeply concerned” on air strikes

Salem, MA – Today, Seth Moulton, Marine veteran and Democratic candidate for Congress in Massachusetts' 6th Congressional District, issued the following statement on President Obama’s decision to authorize humanitarian aid and airstrikes in northern Iraq:

“I stand behind President Obama’s decision to provide humanitarian assistance to Iraqi civilians in the face of imminent genocide; acting now is the morally right thing to do. As I have clearly stated before, we must be very careful not to put American combat troops on the ground in Iraq, and I remain deeply concerned about the risk of civilian casualties when airstrikes are used without direction from ground forces.”

“We also must not take any action to prop up the failing Maliki regime. Fundamentally, the crisis in Iraq today is a political crisis resulting from a complete loss of trust in Prime Minister Maliki and his increasingly sectarian government. This must ultimately be met with a political solution, not a military response. If the Iraqis and their security forces have a government they can trust, I am confident they have the personnel and training to combat the ISIS threat on their own. A stable Iraqi state that can protect its own borders must be the ultimate goal of our policy in Iraq.”

Moulton served four tours of duty in Iraq as a Marine Corps infantry officer from 2003 to 2008.
