To the editor:
I’m normally not a political “activist” and usually shy away from discussing politics with my friends. At this point in time, however, we aren’t living under normal circumstances, and there is a candidate running against Congressman John Tierney to represent the 6th Congressional District that has made me step out of my comfort zone and get vocal.
Seth Moulton is many things: a North Shore native, an Iraq war veteran, an entrepreneur and someone with strong values. He is not a career politician, which is what I think makes him a perfect choice to represent us in Washington. He is as frustrated as many of us are when it comes to the ineffectiveness of our elected officials and is running against John Tierney so that he can get us moving forward and stop the stagnant representation that the 6th Congressional District has seen for nearly two decades.
I first heard of Seth and his position on the issues during an NPR interview when I was driving home from work. What struck me was that every time he spoke of the things he valued the most and the things that have driven him to take his stance on key issues, I found myself nodding along. He sees the flaws in the system, but instead of complaining and spinning his wheels, he’s putting together plans that tackle the problems head-on, from veterans affairs, education and the lack of equal pay in 2014 between men and women, to the environment and equal rights for all, regardless of their sexual orientation.
One of the main reasons I am so frustrated with politics today is the lack of cooperation and bipartisanship. Far too often, measures get stalled behind finger-pointing and foot-dragging. This has to stop.
For the first time in 18 years, Democrats on the North Shore have a chance to change all this. Seth Moulton is dedicated to reaching across the aisle and making true progress. Many polls indicate that if the race for the congressional seat for the 6th District comes down to Tierney versus Richard Tisei, Tierney will lose. The polls also indicate that a race between Seth Moulton and Richard Tisei would see Seth as the winner.
The first step to ensure this outcome is to vote in the Democratic primary on Sept. 9, with a vote for Seth. It’s time to elect the best candidate to represent us. It’s time to elect Seth Moulton to begin moving forward.
I’m proud to be helping to organize an event taking place today at 6:30 p.m. at Newburyport Brewing Company, where voters can meet Seth and see why he deserves your vote. I hope to see many of you there.
