Boston Globe: Former Gen. McChrystal to endorse congressional hopeful Moulton

Former general Stanley A. McChrystal is set to campaign for and officially endorse Democrat Seth Moulton, the former Marine officer who is aiming to topple US Representative John F. Tierney.

This will be McChrystal’s first public endorsement of a political candidate, according to the Moulton campaign.

McChrystal, the former top general overseeing the war effort in Afghanistan, was forced to resign in June 2010 after he and his aides were quoted speaking dismissively of civilians leaders in a Rolling Stone article.

McChrystal is scheduled to appear a Moulton event in Peabody later this afternoon. It comes after he headlined a fundraiser for the candidate in April.

While Moulton and McChrystal both served in support of the 2007 “surge” in Iraq, they connected in 2011 when Moulton was a graduate student at Harvard and invited the former general to speak to students, according to Moulton spokeswoman Carrie Rankin.

She added they had also worked together on a project to give every young American an opportunity to engage in a year of public service.

McChrystal is not the only former general to get behind Moulton’s campaign. Former general David H. Petraeus, a one-time CIA chief, headlined a February event for Moulton that included top donors, Moulton’s campaign said.
